Traditional Medicinal Uses

• Diuretic and Laxative: Traditionally reported to act as a mild diuretic and laxative. • Digestive Relief: Used in folk practices to help ease symptoms of heartburn and tympanitis (gas buildup/bloating). • Wound Care: The fresh sap extracted from crushed parts of the plant is applied topically as a cicatrisant (wound-healing agent) for minor sores and cuts. • Headache Relief: Folk tradition sometimes involves tying the fresh grass around the head to help alleviate headaches.

Known Hazards and Precautions

• Livestock Toxicity: In regions like South Africa, the plant has been linked to conditions in livestock such as a sheep disease known as "dikoor" (sometimes associated with fungal smuts). • Colic Risk: Grazing or consuming the grass when it is excessively wet or eaten in large quantities can trigger severe or fatal colic in animals. • Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN): Trace amounts of hydrogen cyanide can be found in the stems and leaves, with higher concentrations concentrated in the roots.
